New Parents

If your child is just reaching Preschool age, hopefully the information below will be helpful. If your questions are not answered here, please feel free to call into see us during a session (see our Opening Times or give Lee a call).

What is Preschool for?

Preschool allows your child to grow independently in a home from home environment, in preparation for school, developing the skills required to join reception at your chosen school.

We welcome all children aged from 2 to school age from Kington St Michael, all surrounding villages and Chippenham in Wiltshire.

Settling In

Our aim is for your child to feel happy, safe and stimulated and to feel secure and comfortable with staff and the other children when being left by a parent/carer.

Acorns Preschool is a welcoming place where children settle quickly and easily because consideration has been given to the child’s needs prior to the child starting.

We recommend that you visit with your child before their start date to enable your child to become familiar with the setting, staff and other children.  Once your child starts, you can stay with your child until you are comfortable your child will be happy, safe and well cared for.  We have various methods of settling in your child which we will be happy to discuss with you.

Key Worker

A Key Worker is a member of staff who will develop a close relationship with you and your child over the time they spend at Acorns Preschool.  We feel that this encourages security and better stability for your child.

Our aim is to help your child develop in a friendly, safe happy home from home environment, where they can learn through play to become more independent. We encourage them to interact socially and build their self-confidence in preparation for school.

We aim to work closely with parents/carers to ensure the best possible care is maintained for your child.

Rising 5’s – Squirrels

Held on a Thursday afternoon

Acorns Preschool offers a Rising 5 facility (Squirrels) to all children who will be going to school the following September.

The purpose of Squirrels is to begin to prepare your child for school by presenting them with a variety of new challenges, encouraging them to develop new skills and build self-confidence.  Squirrels work is linked as much as possible to the theme of the term.  The main priority of these sessions is to encourage the children to work as a group, developing social and language skills and also to encourage independence and respect for peers and for other children. Some activities we start to introduce are pencil control, letter sounds, changing for PE, science and learning about their environment.

This will gradually build up as the terms progress nearer to them starting school.  Squirrels sessions can be covered by Nursery Vouchers.

Free Childcare

Please note that we are now able to offer the full 15/30 hours funding depending on your circumstances – click here for more info.

What to Bring

At Acorns we promote a lot of outside play. We are very lucky to have a really diverse outside space and we make full use of it – in all weather! This means each child needs a change of clothes, wellies, warm coat for the winter, sun hat and sun cream for the summer. If your child is staying over lunch, then a healthy packed lunch is required too. If your child is still in nappies, then spare nappies and wipes please too.
